還暦

Handmade Bunting

So my dad turned 60 a week ago. For me 60 used to be the age that I thought: "That's old.. O.A.Ps are 60" but now I look at my dad and think.. he's not old.. and so 60 doesn't seem old for me anymore.. Strange how perceptions can shift like that.

In Japan the 60th birthday is called Kanreki (還暦) and is considered special as that is when the five cycles of the Chinese zodiac have been completed.
So in a way a person is "reborn" on their 60th birthday.

I asked my dad if he felt reborn..
“ No.

Oh well, I'm sure he's looking forward to his bus pass and free London travel anyway.
